Fun Walk at Southend-on-Sea, Essex

We had a great day together to celebrate the International Day of the Dog on Sunday 30th April 2006. Becca, Rachael & Julie went to Southend in Essex to raise awareness of the day by taking a stroll along the seafront in our IDOD T-shirts, talking to the public, handing out leaflets and balloons and stickers for the children. Becca’s brother, Rob, also came along and did a great job speaking to people and handing out the leaflets too.

We all took one of our dogs, Alf, Leon & Max who were incredible on the day, considering they had never been there before or had so much attention from the public (although Max smelled the sea air, saw the sand and wanted to go for fun and frolics in the sea, however with a little stop, start, change direction he realised there would be no swimming this time!). They had lots of strokes from children and adults alike and took it all in their stride.

We were met by the photographer from our local paper, the Evening Echo, at 12 noon at Rossi’s Ice Cream Parlour and had a chat with her and our picture taken for an article to hopefully appear in the paper next week. Though not a dog lover, she was very impressed with our boys and this gave us the opportunity to highlight to her how effective Jan’s method of canine communication really is.

We then started our walk along the busiest part of the seafront. We were lucky with the weather as the sun began to shine, and apart from quite a few strange looks and “No, not today thank you's", most people were curious as to what we were celebrating, accepting our leaflets with interest and reading them. Becca was fantastic at getting the attention of the children with the stickers and balloons. As it was such a nice day, there were plenty of people with their dogs as well who we spoke to that didn’t know about the significance of the day. We were able to answer a few questions and give information about the growing use of abusive gadgets and other forceful ways of training, letting them know there is an alternative way.
