Campaign to Outlaw Cruel Training Aids April 29th 2007 is the second International Day of the Dog (IDOD), when Jan Fennell and her 'Associate Dog Listeners' try to raise people’s awareness of canine welfare in general, and the prevention of cruelty and bullying in particular, by the use of a variety of events and publicity. Robin Glover’s goal for this year’s IDOD is to encourage owners using such "Training Aids" as choke chains, spike collars, mustard spray collars and electric shock collars, to first of all STOP and THINK, and then hopefully STOP USING THEM. Most pet owners are not cruel; they only want the best for their dogs. They hit a problem when they are misled by some quick-talking salesman or carefully worded advert which tells them that if they buy product X, it will solve all their problems in one quick fix. Because they care about their dogs but are panicked by some behaviour problem, they purchase the latest gadget, which generally promises much but delivers little – if anything – to help either dog or owner. Robin hopes to go further than just getting people to stop using this equipment. His intention is to get people to hand in such equipment to places like Vets' Surgeries and Local Authority Dog Wardens, rather like the gun and knife amnesties when people can leave weapons in a box at Police Stations, no questions asked. The intent would be the same: to take harmful equipment out of circulation, and to encourage people to make a commitment to no longer accept the use of such barbaric methods in the name of training. Sign a petition to ban the importation, sale or use of all dog "training equipment", such as the spiked or prong collar, that inflicts pain or suffering on any animal. Robin Glover served as a police officer for 35 years. In 1977 he was accepted as a member of the Dog Section, moving to Aldershot to provide dog cover across the county until his retirement in 2002. During his service on the dog section, Robin worked patrol dogs who were trained in tracking, searching and drug detection.
Robin became aware of Jan Fennell's work and how she used the dogs’ own hidden language to make for happier, less stressed dogs and owners using a system called Amichien® Bonding. Having read Jan’s books, Robin realised how similar it was to the methods he had been using, but Jan had put the system into a different context. This enabled him to see why the system worked so that when he came across a problem, there was now a step-by-step route around it. Robin has since attended Jan’s foundation and advanced courses in canine communication and currently offers his services as a Recommended Associate Dog Listener. More information on Robin and the services he offers can be found at www.robinglover.com.
